2 of the best picnic spots in London

Even though it’s winter, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a perfect time of year to go for a lovely picnic with friends, family or even for a romantic lunch. People who don’t live in London are often surprised at the amount of places there are to go for a picnic, where you can escape the fast pace of the city and really relax before you go back to its vibrancy.

Picnics can be a particularly nice way to enjoy a spot of brunch, or celebrate something with a loved one and the best bit is that you don’t have to queue or wait for the bill!

Of course, you have to make sure that you’re eating in a designated picnic spot and that you clean up after yourself but, apart from that, London is your oyster when it comes to eating homemade snacks al fresco.

We’ve jotted down just a couple of places that are great for you to enjoy a picnic at any time of year, including places that have excellent views, so you can see the city at its best.

Kew Garden

Kew Gardens

The is probably the best place you can go for a picnic in London, if only because there is a lot you can do there besides eat your lunch.

Kew Gardens is proudly one of the largest botanical gardens in the world, as it spans 121 hectares of space. It really is the perfect way to visit the city but get a breath of fresh air at the same time – it’s one of the most unexpected treasures throughout London.

Founded in 1840, it features famous glasshouses that are filled to the brim with 30,000 different types of jungle plants and herbs that we’re sure you’ll be fascinated to see. Not only this but it has a unique treetop walkway that stands 18 metres above the ground, giving you an excellent view across the whole garden.

Other sites include an orangery, a ten-storey pagoda, Queen Charlotte’s cottage and the classical-style Kew Palace. The latter building is open to the public and has even played as the host venue for Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday parties.

Keep an eye on the programme of events for Kew Gardens, as it is famous for its festivals, talks and other arts and cultural happenings.

If you are looking for somewhere great to stay when you are visiting London, look no further than The Shaftesbury Hotel Hyde Park. It’s ideally located just a few minutes walk from two Tube stations and is in the path of bus routes, so it’s really easy to get to and from other places.

Our hotel is a great choice for anyone, from someone travelling for a couple of days on business to a family on holiday together for a week or more.

To get from the hotel to Kew Gardens, walk two minutes to Bayswater Station and take the District line for six minutes to Earl’s Court Station, then swap trains and take the Richmond District line for 16 minutes to Kew Gardens Station. From there, it’s just a five-minute walk to the gardens itself.

Hyde Park

Of course, Hyde Park is a perfect place to have a picnic at any time of year; it’s right in the middle of the city making it a truly exhilarating place for you to visit.

This is one of the Royal Parks in the city, which also include Bushy Park, Green Park, Greenwich Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent’s Park, St James’ Park and Richmond Park. Anyone is welcome to picnic in these areas and it has become quite a popular pastime for both those who live in the city and people who are just visiting.

Hyde Park is great at any time of year, in summer there are lots of concerts and Speaker’s Corner – a free speaking public platform – is in full flow, and in winter there are markets and ice rinks that are perfect for all the family to enjoy.

You can even organise large-scale picnic events in Hyde Park, as well as any of the other Royal Parks in the city. Hyde Park allows a maximum of 40 guests for private events but, if you want to organise an event larger than this, then you can contact the park to make arrangements.

There are some guidelines for enjoying the park when you’re picnicking, as there is a variety of wildlife that live in Hyde Park and the safety of both you and them is very important. You can find a comprehensive list of do’s and don’ts on the Royal Parks website, if you need clear information.
