November 5th is always a special night, as the sky is filled with exploding colours and the smell of gunpowder. Marking the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, Bonfire Night is always a spectacle, and London does no half-measures in celebrating it.

A firm favourite among locals has always been the Ealing Cricket Club Fireworks, which will be on November 8th this year. Beyond the bonfire and the pyrotechnics, there will be fun for the whole family, including food stalls, thrilling rides and live entertainment.

This year, the main display has a ‘Century Cinema’ theme, meaning that you will be able to enjoy the fireworks being set off to a backdrop of classic theme tunes playing from the likes of Star Wars, Rocky and Mission Impossible. The display will commence at 7.30pm, but gates open from 6pm – tickets start from £6.

Another option is the Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival, taking place a week earlier on November 1st. Not only will you be dazzled by the display, but all this will be taking place in iconic grounds of Alexandra Palace. Be sure to try some of the scary rides here, sample some craft beer, partake in some ice skating, or take the little ones to the family zone, which boasts its own entertainment, funfair and face painting.

Other celebrations in the capital include the Family Fireworks at Richmond Athletic Ground on November 2nd and the Lambeth celebrations on the big night itself (November 5th).

Whatever you choose to do, the fun tends to carry on well into the night, so you may need a place to crash your head in the city – consider the luxurious, comfortable and affordable Shaftesbury hotels.
