Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is one of the West End's most popular and successful musicals, adapted from the children's classic by Roald Dahl.
It has broken records at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where it has been seen by over half a million people since it opened in June 2013.
Telling the story of Charlie Bucket who wins a 'Golden Ticket' to see inside eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka's factory, the story has been popular with children and adults alike since its book release in 1964. The classic was adapted to film in 2005, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and directed by Tim Burton, before hitting the stage in summer 2013, to rave reviews.
From May 2014, the entertaining musical has a brand new Willy Wonka – Alex Jennings.
The only performer to have won an Olivier Award in the Drama, Musical and Comedy categories, Jenning is bound to be an excellent addition to the cast.
He has won Best Actor for Peer Gynt (1996), Best Actor in a Musical for My Fair Lady (2003), and Best Comedy Performance for Too Clever By Half (1988), as well as being an Associate at the National Theatre and the RSC.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is directed by Sam Mendes. Featuring ingenious stagecraft, the wonder of the original story that has captivated the world for almost 50 years is brought to life with music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, a book by award-winning playwright and adaptor David Greig, set and costume designs by Mark Thompson and choreography by Peter Darling.
Jennings will take to the stage for his first performance on Monday May 19th 2014. The theatre is taking bookings up until May 30th 2015.
