London unveils sports line-up

Sports fanatics across the globe may soon be looking to book hotel rooms in London as the capital's official media outlet London & Partners has unveiled an "incredible" line-up of events.

Among the full roster of sporting events to be held in the Olympic venues during the official games and test matches in 2012, guests staying in London hotels can also catch the NFL clash at Wembley and the Heineken Cup Final at Twickenham.

These major events join perennial favourites in the capital's sporting calendar including the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, the Virgin London Marathon and the Wimbledon Championships.

"2012 will be one of the most exciting year in London's history. Not only are we hosting the greatest show on earth with citywide celebrations making it a summer like no other, there will be outstanding sporting talent competing at the very highest level throughout the year," commented London's mayor Boris Johnson.

"Our aim is to create a lasting legacy, and through my Sports Legacy Programme, we are investing millions in new facilities, training thousands of new coaches and creating a huge range of free sporting opportunities for Londoners. 2012 will inspire even the most ardent couch potato to take up a sport."

In combination with the sporting events, the city will be hosting a programme of cultural activities across the capital.

This includes the London 2012 Festival, between June 21st and September 9th, which will include carnivals, dancers, film screenings, comedy shows, special museum exhibits, theatre performances, food, fashion and more.

Furthermore, the mayor's office is planning more events, including outdoor art showcases, London Live in Hyde Park, Victoria Park and Trafalgar Square and attractions to encourage tourists to visit lesser known areas of the city.
