What to Look Forward to at The BBBC Proms This Year

If you’re a fan of classical music – whether an avid follower or simply casually enjoy the genre, you’ve likely heard of the BBC Proms. If not, this celebration of classical music is something of a national institution and a highlight of the London cultural calendar every year. The BBC Proms is a series of events which spans throughout August and September. As part of the BBC Proms, a range of orchestral classical music concerts and other events are held throughout London. Most of these concerts are held at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.

Prom 35: John Wilson Conducts Oklahoma!

1943 musical ‘Oklahoma!’ comes to the BBC Proms this year thanks to acclaimed conductor, John Wilson. John Wilson and his orchestra bring their signature energy and unique style and take to this American classic. ‘Oklahoma!’ was the first collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein back in 1943, and it has remained one of the world’s top musicals ever since. The Royal Albert Hall is close to much of The Shaftesbury Hotel Collection and easy to get to from most budget hotels in London.

Prom 42: Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth

Prom 42 is a French programme inspired by the East. Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth take elements of Delibes Lakmé and Samson and Delilah, combined with Lalo’s Namouna, to create a BBC Proms masterpiece.

Prom 50: Beethoven, Stravinsky and Gerald Barry

This show explores political and artistic freedom and is led by The CBSO and Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla. It includes Beethoven, Stravinsky and Barry with a focus on triumph and drama.

Prom 54: La Scala Philharmonic and Riccardo Chailly

Riccardo Chailly returns to the BBC Proms for another year as Music Director of the Filarmonica della Scala; the Filarmonica della Scala is at the Proms for the very first time. The concert boasts a range of fantastic pieces and a lot of orchestral colour. If you’re staying at The Shaftesbury Hotel Collection or any of the budget hotels in London, this show is well worth checking out.

Prom 62: Chineke!

‘Chineke!’ is the UK’s first BME orchestra and it has already been reviewed as being fresh and brilliant by critics. It’s making its BBC Proms debut with a great programme, including George Walker and Hannah Kendall.

Prom 72: Vienna Philharmonic – Mahler’s Sixth Symphony

Mahler’s Sixth Symphony is one of despair, frenzy and darkness; though that isn’t to say it’s anything less than a superb musical experience. It is a Viennese Work with the Vienna Philharmonic.
